Birds

Q - I  have noticed a hummingbird unlike any I have ever seen. It is only about 3/4" long, and is not colored like the ruby-throated ones we have seen. It has a lot of browns and yellow. At first I thought it was a different kind of bee, but when I got closer I could see it's tiny little feet, wings, and head. It loves coming up to my purple phlox. I did not realize that the phlox would be the kind of flower that hummingbirds would like. The kids have been fascinated by it.   --  JAR

A - I have seen what looked like hummingbirds and were really moths. Take a look at this website-  http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/help/faq/sphinx/sphinx.htm - for some interesting information and to help you identify your moth!  Both hummingbird and butterflies (and obviously these moths, too) like phlox.  (I later received e-mail that she had identified it as a hummingbird clearwing moth.)
