Travel With The Vikings!

One thousand years ago an adventurous man named Leif Ericsson sailed 1500 miles from Greenland to Newfoundland and established the first contact between Europeans and native North Americans. This summer you have the opportunity to make this same voyage with another adventurous man named Hodding Carter, age 34, and his crew of eleven. The six to eight week voyage will be made in a wind and man powered (Row, Row, Row Your Boat) vessel built from the plans of a 1000 year old Viking ship. Although you won't actually set sail until July 7th, there is just enough time to gather information to make your voyage more meaningful. You may download the free RealPlayer (for audio and video) and Shockwave (for the game) by clicking on the appropriate words. Learn about the crew; find out about the sailing vessel; find out what what supplies they will take with them; download the route map; and learn some Viking lore. There is even a game to play. During the trip gather weather and other related data, make charts, map the progress, and write stories about your adventure. The Voyage1000 is sponsored by Lands' End stores. Bring a friend, come aboard, grab an oar or hoist the jib, and Travel With The Vikings for a great summer learning adventure!
