Bloomington police have contacted Ohio authorities who found the body of a missing Ohio college student
last week. Police say there's nothing to connect that incident with the disappearance of Jill Behrman. But
they wanted Ohio authorities to have the information in case something else comes up.
A hearing is scheduled this afternoon for convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. He's asking a
federal judge to stop the appeals process and set an execution date. McVeigh will participate via
closed-circuit television from Terre Haute, where he's on federal death row.

If the current trend holds true, this December will end up the third coldest December for central Indiana
since meteorologists first started keeping weather records. Currently, the third-coldest December was in
1983 when temperatures averaged 20.2 degrees. The coldest was in 1963 with an average of 18.5 degrees.
Three projects on the Hoosier National Forest were recognized by the Eastern Region recently. The Forest
was recognized for the restoration of the Roland Wetland, for work with African-American students and
the Underground Railroad, and for information initiatives.

After Christmas returns will cause long lines at area stores today. The weather will not cooperate, however, as more snow, blowing snow, and cold weather is predicted.

The weather just won't give up! Although area schools are in session, all are again on delays. On the positive side, state entomologists are telling us that these cold temperatures should help some of our insect problems next summer.
Cummins announced yesterday that it will lay off another 500 employees by next spring. That means about 800 jobs will be lost in the Columbus area. Cummins says a slumping market for heavy-duty trucks is behind the layoffs.

The bad weather continues to cause problems for motorists and school officials. The slick roadways and wind chills below zero prompted schools in the county to delay or close for the day.
December 18
To begin the last week before Christmas break, Seymour, Crothersville, Brownstown Central Schools and Jennings County Schools were on a 2 hour delay today because of the weather. Medora Community Schools were closed today. More snow is expected tonight. Medora Schools will be closed Tuesday.
State Representative Brent Steele has assumed the role of Republican Whip in the Indiana House. Representing parts of Brown, Monroe, Lawrence, Washington, and Jackson Counties, he will be in charge of lining up votes on issues that are important to the caucus. State Senator Becky Skillman will serve as a ranking member on the Government & Regulatory Affairs and the Legislative Apportionment & Elections Committees, as well as the Finance/Budget subcommittee and the Commerce & Consumer Affairs Committees.

Seymour Plan Commission passes ordinance moving Seymour toward regulation of future downtown businesses. The ordinance will now go before the Seymour City Council in January.
The state's consumer advocate says Indiana Gas Co. should share the cost of rising natural gas prices along with its customers. Last week, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved one-month rate hikes for Indiana Gas and Citizens Gas & Coke Utility while state officials investigate the spiraling cost of natural gas. Anthony Dzwonar, a spokesman for the consumer counselor's office, said Indiana Gas came up short in buying gas at the best prices. "We think it's a clear violation of their responsibility to procure gas at the lowest reasonable amount," he said. State regulators are limited in what they can do about gas prices. But they have said they will closely study how utilities buy gas. WBIW

Hardee's American Heritage Award is presented to a Seymour man.
Trinity Lutheran High School will begin holding classes next fall.
Many Seymour area children, parents, and senior citizens filled the Seymour High School auditorium last Saturday and Sunday to enjoy a special holiday celebration as "The Nutcracker" was presented by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Dancers Studio, Inc. Thanks go out to those who worked many hours to prepare and to those businesses and dedicated people who sponsored the performance!

Former Indiana University basketball players are buying full-page newspaper ads to wish fired coach Bob Knight good luck. The players are paying for ads which will appear December 17th in the Indianapolis Star and Bloomington Herald-Times. The Knight ads follow a full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune in late September that supported IU's decision to fire the coach. -- WBIW
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Dancers Studio, Inc. will present Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" at the Seymour High School Auditorium at 2:30 p.m. December 9th and 10th. Advance tickets may be purchased at Jackson County Bank. Tickets are also available at the door.

A lawmaker from French Lick wants to change the way Indiana picks members for the electoral college. Democratic State Representative Jerry Denbo wants to divide Indiana's presidential votes based on election results in each congressional district. He says changing the system could give the state more political clout. -- WBIW
The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University in Bloomington will have its first regular scheduled and publicly announced public tour on December 15th. The Institute conducts research on sexuality, gender and reproduction. It also has a large collection of books, artwork and films. -- WBIW
