In an interview with Playboy Magazine, Bob Knight says he wants to coach again. Knight spends much of the article venting against the IU Athletic Director and others responsible for his firing.
January 26
A Bloomington man charged with tree spiking says he's innocent. 26-year-old Frank Ambrose was arrested
Thursday for spiking trees at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest last June. Tree spiking is a felony.
Some motorists who drive with children in their vehicles could face increased penalties. Proposed legislation would eliminate probationary licenses for motorists convicted of driving drunk with children in their car or who have one or more previous convictions.

No big winners last night in the Hoosier Lotto or Powerball games. The Hoosier Lotto jackpot moves to
$9million for the weekend while the Powerball jackpot increases to $36
million for the weekend contest.
January 23
No riverboat in Orange County. A change to a bill calling for a riverboat in the French Lick/West Baden
area was approved Monday. The change, proposed by an Evansville State Representative, was suggested because
of the fear of hurting Casino Aztar, the oldest and smallest riverboat in the state.
Like the stock market, you try to buy low and sell high. Monroe County officials say drug dealers from
Detroit have been a large percentage of the drug convictions in Monroe County courts over the last
year. Monroe County officials say towns and cities like Bloomington are good targets because crack
cocaine is relatively scarce compared to large cities like Detroit, Indianapolis and Chicago.

Monroe county prosecutors say crack cocaine dealers from Detroit are gaining a foothold in Bloomington.
In the past year, there have been 18 cocaine convictions in the county and prosecutors say nearly
half of the defendants were from Detroit.

In High School basketball action around the area, the Seymour Owls play host to the BNL stars tonight. Tip off for the varsity contest is set for about 7:30 p.m.

J.C. Penney is closing four stores in Indiana. The closing in late April of the J.C. Penney store in Bloomington College Mall may have some effect on other area stores. Current plans are to keep the Seymour and Bedford locations open.

It's Martin Luther King Jr. Day. That means city and county government offices are closed for today. There will also be no mail delivery for today.

The preferred site for a permanent National Weather Service (NWS) Doppler radar for Southwest Indiana has been selected, marking what could be the final stage of long and well-fought battle, U.S. Rep. John Hostettler said today. Following a site identification survey of the region, the NWS today announced it has selected property near Owensville in Gibson County as its preferred site for a permanent Doppler radar designed to enhance severe weather detection in the Tri-State area. The proposed site is about three miles southwest of Owensville. The NWS is now engaged in negotiations to acquire a 210-foot by 210-foot parcel on which to construct a 30-meter radar tower. A three-month environmental assessment of the site must be conducted as well. The permanent radar is expected to be operational by September 2002.

Tonight the Seymour City Council will vote on an ordinance to restrict the kinds of businesses that want to locate in the downtown area. In December it had been argued that certain businesses drive away other potential businesses in from locating downtown.
Bell-Ford Bridge catches the eye of Conner Prairie. Local hope for the future of the bridge increases.

Jackson County Fire Investigations - Indiana State Fire Marshall was unable to determine a cause of the fire that destroyed a downtown Brownstown building early in the week. However, it was determined that the fire which destroyed the Taylor Chapel Church was intentionally set.
January 3
A Nashville police officer has been cited for drunken driving near Martinsville early Christmas eve. Officer Diana Clephane was cited for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. She's been placed on administrative leave with pay until the town safety council meets later this month.
Construction of the Blockbuster Video Store is expected to begin early this year. It will be at 512 Tipton. Applebee's Restaurant is also looking at property in the Seymour area.
State Rep. Terry Goodin (D-Crothersville) has filed legislation that would provide income tax credits to any person who wishes to contribute money to any public school corporation, special education cooperative or vocational education cooperative in the state.

The weather was not a major problem as New Year revelry ended and the reality set in. Students returned to school and it was business as usual.
In downtown Brownstown, a 109 year old historic building occupied by Country Mansions gift shop was destroyed by fire on Monday night. The building next door was flattened by a collapsing wall. It housed the Chamber of Commerce. Traffic on U.S. 50 through the downtown area was rerouted for several hours..
Local Purdue alumni were not celebrating Monday night after the Rose Bowl game. Purdue lost the contest 34-24!

It's a New Year! It's a New Century! It's a New Millennium!!
Area Purdue fans will be glued to their T.V. sets late afternoon today as the Boilermakers meet the Washington Huskies in the Rose Bowl.
