The Schnitzelbank

There are hundreds of very good restaurants in Indiana within an easy two hour's drive from Lawrence County. . Many of these are close to other attractions as well, making possible one or more days of fun and entertainment. One such restaurant is located at 393 Third Avenue (Hwy. 162 South) in Jasper (map). In keeping with the German heritage in the Jasper area, it is called The Schnitzelbank, which may prompt some of you to recall the song by the same name. The original Schnitzelbank was built in 1903. Larry and Betty Hanselman became the proprietors in 1961 and moved into the present facility in 1971. With their semi-retirement in 1991 three of their children (who naturally grew up in the business) took up the reins of this famous family restaurant. As one might expect, the menu at The Schnitzelbank lists many delicious German specialties. However, for those who prefer American cuisine they serve excellent steaks and seafood as well. While in Jasper one might take a walking tour of the city or visit other attractions of interest in Dubois County and the surrounding area. To mention a few, Lincoln Amphitheater offers outdoor drama in the summertime and is only 22 miles from Jasper; for those interested in a theme park adventure, Holiday World is approximately 25 miles; and for those who are inclined toward lake/outdoor activity Patoka Lake is only 19 miles. Check the calendar of area special events and festivals throughout the year or simply drive down for a memorable meal at The Schnitzelbank. They serve Monday through Saturday and are closed on Sundays.
